About the Care Colloquium, one student reported, “I was surprised at the variety of health professionals involved in patient care.

2 Fourth and Fifth Years: Clinical Clerkships In this course, students are required to attend clinical practice as members of medical teams. To encourage students to communicate more and develop relationships with team members, including nurses and ward clerks, we extended the period of training in a single hospital ward from 2 weeks to 2 months and the total period from 1 year to 1½ years. Students can effectively develop competence for interprofessional work through the clinical clerkships. 1 Characteristics of the IPE Program First, the IPE program places emphasis on practical training rather than on didactic lectures.

We are determined to further promote our collaborative efforts. Our graduates will put what they have learned from interprofessional education into practice and promote favorable outcomes for care recipients, patients, and the disabled and elderly. Emulating the practice of IPE developed in the United Kingdom,5 some universities in Japan are taking new approaches to implement cooperative education, including the establishment of the Japan Association for Interprofessional Education. Although favorable results have been obtained from cooperation among medical professionals, collaboration between health care and welfare has just started.
