As we have seen, bad parenting does not usually cause ADHD. o To accept that some people have a physiological reason for difficulty controlling their behavior runs counter to our deep convictions about who we are.

Although many children with ADHD and mood disorders meet diagnostic criteria for ODD, I personally rarely diagnose the latter condition, instead finding most of the negative behaviors as inadvertently stemming from an overwhelmed nervous system. In other words, I see oppositional behaviors as usually secondary to 36 / ADHD—LIVING WITHOUT BRAKES some other problem that has yet to be successfully addressed (see Table 2: ADHD vs ODD). 2.
